How To Use Cutting Torch Safely And Correctly

1. When using the ejection and suction cutting torch, check the ejection and suction force of the cutting torch before connecting the acetylene hose. The method is to connect only the oxygen hose, open the acetylene valve and oxygen valve on the cutting torch, and place your finger on the acetylene inlet of the cutting torch. If you feel suction, it indicates that the ejection and suction force is fine. Then check whether acetylene gas flows out normally in the acetylene hose. Then install the acetylene hose on the cutting torch.

2. Before the cutting torch is ignited, check its connection and each air valve for air leakage.

3. After the oxygen and acetylene valves are opened, it is forbidden to block the cutting nozzle with hands or other objects to prevent oxygen from flowing back into the acetylene gas supply system and causing flashback.

4. When igniting, turn on acetylene first, and then turn on the oxygen valve to adjust the flame. In this way, as soon as signs of backfire are found, the oxygen valve can be closed immediately to extinguish the fire. The disadvantage is that the flame produces carbon black smoke at the beginning. If you slightly open the oxygen valve first, then open the acetylene valve and then ignite, you can avoid black smoke. However, it is easy to backfire when the cutting torch leaks or the end of the cutting nozzle is blocked.

5. When igniting, the cutting torch should be outward and downward to prevent the flame from hurting the someone. Special ignition gun or ignition rope shall be used, and cigarette butts shall not be used for ignition. When using the ejection and suction cutting torch, the hand should be held on the handle, not on the mixing tube, so as to avoid scalding the hand in case of backfire.

6. Do not put the lighted cutting torch on the ground.

7. Once there’s backfire, close the gas valve immediately and then the oxygen valve. After the backfire is stopped, loosen the gas regulator and find out the cause of backfire before reignition. Before reignition, the soot in the rubber hose and the cutting torch should be blown out, and the cutting torch should be put into water for cooling.

8. When cutting is over and the flame is out, the oxygen valve should be closed first, then the gas valve, and finally the preheating oxygen valve.

9. When the cutting torch is not in use for the time being, it cannot be placed in the tunnel, trench or under the workpiece, or locked in the toolbox, so as to avoid acetylene leakage. If fuel gas and air mixture accumulation in these spaces, explosion may occur by a spark.

10. At the end of your work, the gas regulator and cutting torch should be removed, and the valves on gas cylinders and gas circuits should be closed.
